The leaves are falling off trees, shorts are being put away, and the temperatures are slowly starting to drop. Winter is around the corner, is your home ready for the harsh temperatures?
Frozen pipes are a common problem for most northerners due to rapidly decreasing temperatures, and while the snow is pretty, it is frozen water that often leads to costly plumbing repairs. Water freezes at 32 degrees resulting in frozen pipes. Insulating exposed helps keeps water flowing at a reasonable temperature helping protect pipes. Pipes can range from being within the house in basements, garages, and crawl spaces to the exterior of houses.
Disconnecting outdoor hoses is what most homeowners do between seasons as most plants are dying or hibernating for the winter months. Therefore there is not a strong need for a hose outside the house. Adding covers to those faucets prevent frozen spigots.
Moving inside the house checking for drafts coming from windows, doors, or walls near plumbing is important to seal off keeping all the cold air out.
Your sump pump is important to check regularly due to the constant amounts of heavy snow and rain that hit the area between winter and spring. That water might leak into the house which is not a problem if the sump pump works. Keeping that up to date helps avoid more damage in the house which could result in higher prices replacing more than you expected.
Flushing the water heater helps reduces the efficiency and shorter the lifespan of the heater causing it to constantly needing to be replaced. The easiest solution is to keep the keep on in the house to keep water flowing and pipes water avoiding the inevitable freezing.
Call a professional if there is low water pressure, trouble with the water heater, clogged drained, and persistent leaks. The help of an expert will save you a larger amount of money over time keeping all things safe in your house.
Being able to use this checklist you are able to stay cozy and warm this upcoming winter. Keith Renick plumbing is one call away if there is ever a problem you don’t feel comfortable or qualified to handle yourself.
