Dealing with Noisy Pipes

What is that noise coming from your pipes? Is it normal?

Noises coming from pressure, air, loose pipes, or temperature changes. The type of sound helps diagnose what the problem is and how to fix it.
Banging is caused when fast moving water suddenly stops and shakes the pipes. Turning off the main water supply and opening all faucets in the house helps drain the system. Lowering the house water pressure helps avoid further problems if they persist.
Rattling pipes means that pipes are loose inside walls or under sinks. Checking the visible pipes in rooms can help pinpoint the issue. Tightening straps or adding foam around can help steady the pipes to stop movement.
Whistling is caused by worn valves or partially closed shutoff valves. Replacing worn washers or cartridges in faucets or the pressure- reducing valve in your home if it has one. Some homes have them accessible while others do not.
Ticking and tapping are other sounds that are usually harmless caused by thermal expansion when hot water pipes expand. Adding pipe insulation sleeves, and making sure pipes have small gaps where they pass through.
Running one fixture at a time can help you figure out which pipe or fixture causes the noise. Call a plumber when there is loud banging, pipes shaking violently, or leaks appearing with the noise.
