Low water pressure this winter? Could your pipes be frozen?

Hitting temperatures under 30 degrees fahrenheit is a typical New York winter for most. Cold temperatures put stress on pipes and water systems, as water freezes at temperatures higher than typical outdoor conditions. Pipes can run on the exterior walls of building or unheated areas causing them to freeze. Avoiding potential pipes freezing can be easy if you follow these few simple steps.

Protecting your pipes from freezing is worthwhile and can save you a lot of headaches down the line. These recommendations start with insulating areas that have exposed pipes, or even relocating the pipes to a more centrally heated location.

Keeping your pipes from freezing can require either extra work or straightforward measures to avoid the need for thawing. Keeping doors closed if there are water supply lines located nearby. Letting water drip from the faucet where exposed pipes are located can help avoid the water build up which helps prevent water build up and freezing.

Keeping the thermostat at the same temperature throughout the days and nights keep pipes warm. While heating repairs can be significant, they help avoid the much greater cost of repairing frozen and burst pipes.

Occasionally, temperatures drop so rapidly that preventing frozen pipes becomes impossible. Keep faucets open gives the water a chance to melt and get out, helping the continuous running water help defrost the rest of the pipes. Wrapping pipes in warm towels or some kind of warm heat is a more effective way to restore the full water pressure. If one pipe is frozen there is a high chance another one might be, so taking a look around and checking the others can provide a peace of mind of a common solution.

Don’t stress if your pipes freeze during these unexpected temperature changes. It happens to everyone and sometimes there is nothing you can do about it. If these suggestions don’t work to unfreeze you pipes give Keith Renick Plumbing a call. They have experience in water heater repairs and others giving you a bit of warmth during an icy blast of cold weather.
